Slow Motion Triple Feature

This film is distressingly difficult to find, which makes it even more disappointing that the low-rent streaming services on which it is available advertise it wholly on the back of Fifty Shades of Grey. Secretary and Fifty Shades share a few superficial traits—most strikingly the name "Mr. Grey"—but spiritually you could scarcely find two more different works. For one, Secretary is really good.

Andrew and Mike had never seen Chungking Express, so now they owe Kit big time for getting them to watch one of the best movies ever made. Kit also had pneumonia during this episode, so if it sounds like she's about to fall asleep in the middle of a sentence, that's why (and that's after editing out all the coughing and long-ass pauses).

 

To be honest, I'm still thinking about the title of Good Will Hunting, but it's time to watch The Insider, a movie with a name that actually makes sense. Jeffrey Wigand is an insider in the tobacco industry. Boom, done.

Why is the movie called Good Will Hunting? Did they come up with the title and then name the character to give it a double meaning? It's not like "goodwill hunting" is a colloquialism, right? And Hunting isn't even a common last name—it's like one hundred times less popular than Hunt or Hunter. And I wouldn't even say Will was out in these streets hunting for kindness or connection. He was kind of forced into it. So what's the deal?

In this ep we answer the perennial yuletide question: Is it a Christmas movie or not? We're tackling the late-80s, LA-set action-comedy film that launched a slew of sequels, an entire genre, and one of the biggest box-office draws of the 90s, who plays a down-on-his-luck cop—that's right, it's Lethal Weapon!

The day has finally arrived: We discuss one of Mike's favorites, Doug Liman's Go, directed by Doug Liman, director of Go.

This year, we're doing a special holiday triple of black comedy crime thrillers set at Christmas. First up, it's The Ref, which somehow managed to flop upon its 1994 release...in March. At the time of recording, Kit was getting over pneumonia and Mike was dealing with a sinus infection, so you know this one sounds really good.
